The General Principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the main issues related to the international protection of disabled persons under the recent convention on the protection and promotion of the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. It first critically assess the meaning inter alia of the terms disabled persons, equality of opportunity and accessibility. Second, it examines the range of human rights and difficulties associated with interpreting the content and scope of each rights, balanced against other competing rights and values. And, finally, it briefly highlights the functioning (bottom up vs. top down) of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
