Secularism is one of the main topics of public discussion, particularly in Italy. Spreading beyond the academic and philosophical contexts, it is now discussed almost on a daily basis in the media and political life, and has even become a subject of current debate among lay people. This paper aims at investigating secularism in the media and newscasting. What do we mean by a secular newscasting, and can it be achieved? What are, if they exist, the criteria for identifying and verifying a secular and neutral way of reporting news? This article attempts to answer these questions and offer a general discussion based on semantic analysis.
Keywords: Mass media, Newscasting, Pluralism, Secularism, Tolerance, Writing.
