Meeting the enemy: maturation and containment in groups or an impossible task? - The author explores and analyzes his own mental functioning and relational modes to explain the necessary interior path to be followed to overcome impasse situations that keep people and opposing groups anchored to antithetic and irreconcilable positions. He considers war a "pathological situation" that promotes the proliferation of "relational disorders", and suggests that psychoanalysts and group analysts - and women - can play a specific role in building a route that starts from an apparently insurmountable conflict and reaches the ability to form a dialogue. The relational conflict linked to the start and continuation of conflict situations is "the excess of identification" with one’s family, the community or group one belongs to, or the country one comes from. The only way to overcome this conflict is to put an end to avoiding feelings of guilt, which means accepting one’s own faults.
Keywords: War, peace, dialogue, existential threat, guilt, restraining ability.
