Giacinto Dragonetti is the Author of a booklet, Delle virtù e de’ premi (1766) which, associated with the more renown Dei delitti e delle pene (1764) by Cesare Beccaria, had a great success in Europe in the pre-Revolutionary Enlightment. The book is founded upon the idea that any civilized country should parallel punishments for crimes with prizes for virtues. Benedetto Croce, in 1947, challenger the hypothesis that the book had been written by Giacinto Dragonetti. The aim of the paper is twofold: to present the work of Dragonetti; and to close, thanks to archival evidence, the question opened by Croce on the authorship of Delle virtù e dei premi.
