Conciliation has been looked at as a woman’s problem in combining the traditional responsibilities of housework and family with the new ones of a job. The difficulties in managing the so called "double presence" make it clear that this paradigm needs to be changed: from conciliation as a female issue to the conciliation of the social one. The paper focuses on the principal trends which characterize the relationships between partners and parenting in the Italian family today. Also using the data on parental leave - one of the few tools available showing male participation - the paper explores the strategies which favour the visibility and public recognition of fathers involved in childcare.

Keywords: Work-life balance policies, gender, family, care responsibilities, parental leave, fathers
