This paper aims to show the current and prospective situation of the firms managing airport services in Southern Italy in the light of the effects of privatization, which determines the entry of private firms in an economic field previously dominated by the public sector. This situation could become problematic for all those whose profitability doesn’t guarantee self-sufficiency financial balance nor the conditions to achieve higher competitiveness degree to the international level. To aspire to integrate successfully in the flows of traffic, airports will have to equip themselves adequately with significant investments both in new infrastructures and in their maintenance, since the presence of a sufficiently large and functional allocation is a prerequisite for the attraction of airlines. Based on analysis of official data, empirical findings of previous surveys and interviews with privileged witnesses, an assessment about the possibility of improving the perspectives of existing airports is proposed.
