The essay is concerned with the research project Le campagne trevigiane, conducted by the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche of Treviso. The project intended to provide a detailed analysis of the agricultural history, and indeed the economic and social history in general, of the whole province of Treviso between the later fifteenth and mid sixteenth centuries. The most important sources used were the general estimi (lists of taxable wealth) dated 1518 and 1542, and the accumulation and elaboration of data were conducted using modern information technology. The volumes so far published, from 1990 to 2006, amount to thirteen of the eighteen officially planned. This essay summarizes the project’s aims and methods, and offers a brief, partial summary of the results so far obtained. It relates those results to the broader context of historiographical debate and proposes the resumption of the project.
