Academic interest in the urban dimension of conflicts has considerably grown in the last twenty years. The concept of "divided city" has been used to describe a variety of political, economic and social conflicts in different cities of the world, often with the use of comparative analysis. The attention towards this concept shows the growing importance given by scholars and policy makers to the analysis of urban trends and phenomena. On the other side, the emphasis on the concept of divided city hides a variety of definitions, approaches, methodologies related to the study of urban conflicts. This article tries to present a synthetic review of the reference literature, suggesting a taxonomy of urban conflict based on three ideal types of divided, contested and segregated cities.
