This article describes the process of Nicosia’s division, enlightening inner and external mechanisms which contributed to the rising of the conflict and to the shift from a contested city towards a divided city, through the physical separation of Greek and Turkish Cypriots. More than fifty years after the city division, Nicosia is going through a period of transition, since the border has been opened and talks for reconciliation and a possible reunification of Cyprus are taking place. The article analyses the consequences of the division on the city and its administration, underlying actions taken throughout time with the aim to maintain shared forms of territory management. Those actions make it possible to think about a reunification from a structural point of view, although they do not represent a sufficient condition for reconciliation.
