In the last years, a vast scientific literature has devoted growing attention to the topic of craftsmanship from a socio-economic point of view. In this new research perspective, the paper aims at examining its contribution in the specific industries of the so called Made in Italy after the profound transformations that occurred in the Italian industrial system during the last decade. The paper analyzes the relevance of craftsmanship in the mid-size firm and considers its weight in supporting key functions promoted by small firms within global value chains. Policy-wise, the paper discusses how to ignite small firms’ competitiveness developing an innovative approach in education and in international promotion.
