This work has been written and conceived as an introduction to the figure of W. A. Visser’t Hooft, Dutch churchman and theologian as well as one of the most prominent personalities of reformed Protestantism in the first half of the 20th century. The article aims at reconstructing the figure of the first Secretary General of the World Council of Churches from the early beginnings of his thought supporting Europeism and his activities in the resistance against Nazism in Geneva. The article is divided into three parts, each of them chronologically dealing with a passage in Visser’t Hooft’s political thinking, and showing clearly his willingness to affirm the idea of a European Federation as a tool to permanently overtake both warlike and nationalist ideologies.
