This introductory chapter outlines a joint theoretical framework for the analysis of youth labour market and family transitions in modern globalized societies by giving an elaborate definition of the often ambiguously used term of globalization, providing a short empirical sketch of its development throughout recent decades using a newly developed measure of globalization, and outlining the mechanisms by which globalization has affected the employment and family lives of youth in modern Europe. We argue that the consequences of globalization for youth have not been unique across all European countries, but that their impact varies considerably between different nations, depending on their institutional background, i.e. the design of their welfare systems, the design of their systems of education and training and the characteristics of their labour markets.
Keywords: Globalization, youth, labour market, family, international comparison
