The aim of this article is to examine the modifications of youth employment in Italy. Starting from available empirical data, the analysis focus on some critical events: the presence of entry barriers in the labour market and the growing level of inactivity among young people; gender inequalities; north-south differences; the growing level of temporary employment among young people; the crucial role of the family in the school-to-work transition. The analysis highlights that young people have been very damaged from the partial and targeted de-regulation at the margins of the Italian labour market. The authors conclude that a new form of re-regulation is needed.
Keywords: Young people and work, transition to adulthood, Italian welfare regime, regulation of the labour market, work insertion policies, occupational insecurity
