The introduction of non-standard contracts in Italy does not seem to have reached its stated goals, especially for what concerns the expected increase in the employment rate of young women and men. Starting from this observation, in this article an analytical perspective focused on gender differences among young people facing job uncertainty is proposed. After having provided an overview of the phenomenon at national level, the results of a qualitative research are presented, in order to deepen the understanding of the dynamics young women are exposed to in the flexible labour market. Finally, moving from the research results, possible policies in support of atypical work - with a gender perspective - are discussed.
