Given the potential offered by continuous technical evolution, the main problem today is not the unavailability of assistive devices, but the possibility of identifying which technologies are right for customized solutions, how to acquire, to assemble and to learn to use them effectively. In this paper we analyze how traditional models of prostheses evolve into more modern accompaniment devices that are at the user’s disposal, stressing how information on the latest available technologies and education of the user to autonomy play a substantial role. These concepts are supported by case studies conducted by the Servizio DAT (Domotica Ausili Terapia Occupazionale) and Polo Tecnologico, Don Gnocchi Foundation in Milan.
