The present paper aims to characterise the governance structure of the larger Italian business groups. Methods and Results I use micro data available from Centrale dei bilanci (Company Accounts Data Service). The analysis of the geographical connection between holding companies and firms established in different areas has shown that, between 1998 and 2006, the business groups located in the Centre North, with the exception of those operating in the service sector, have strengthened their control in the southern firms. Corporate control in the South by foreign groups has shown a general weakness in all sectors of economic activity. Finally, the larger business groups of Italian capitalism have maintained an active interest in the South by supporting the growth of subsidiary companies. Conclusions Between 1998 and 2006 the dependence of the southern economy from business groups located in the Centre North increased, whereas corporate control of southern firms by foreign groups decreased.
