The author describes the economic and social life in Gardone Val Trompia during the 1940s, between the end of World War II and the recovery of democratic freedom. Gardone was a place dominated by industrial production (two or three firms) and, for the most part, industrial worker’s population, together with public institutions and a few services. Life style was frugal, the concept of wellbeing still in the distant future, and any kind of a large bourgeois class was missing. Family life was based on privacy and on the separation of roles between men and women. As in the rest of the country, there were religious, political and labour contrasts. The unifying elements are the sense of responsibility in doing jobs, of active involvement, of working with precision and skill, and passion.
