Economic data show that the Marches are characterized by a high presence of editorial enterprises and cultural publishers, which is similar to that of other regional areas, such as Umbria, that however display a higher relative visibility. However the creation of a possible "district" seems a rearguard objective, if we consider the large (cultural, technological, and productive) transformations that are taking place, and the specific features of the Marches. The development of a creative business of a new generation, linked to the local manufacturing tradition, seems to have higher chances, even if it is characterized by models and forms of cultural consumption which are far from the traditional book production and circulation. In this regard, the scarce literacy of the regional society could turn from a historical deficit into a competitive factor.
