The author explores the curing role of psychiatry through the examination of concepts developed by Racamier, illustrating them through his longstanding experience at Villeurbanne (Lyon) and his experience as a supervisor of teams of therapeutic communities in Italy, as well. The main, constant connotation of his points of view is the observance of the purpose of any treatment that can be called psychiatric: safeguarding and restoring psychic activity. The concepts that Racamier developed through the years (originary mourning, narcissistic seduction, therapeutic anticipation, double denial, speaking actions, Anti- Oedipus, ecc.) have proved to be useful for the understanding of psychotic processes that help caregivers to find themselves at a junction point between internal and external reality. If they stay in that position, they can fulfill their therapeutic role.
