In rural areas, tourism can play as a lever for local development in the long term. Given that the demand is increasingly oriented towards "touristic experiences", the destination management becomes crucial to achieve the integration of the different components of the local system in a unique offer, coherent with the vocations and the competitive cues of the territory. In this paper, starting from the analysis of a project for the touristic system of Civita di Bagnoregio, we discuss the role of public governance in destination management, showing how public actors may push the socio-economic development of rural areas by supporting and driving the touristic activities under an integrated approach.
