In the last years a number of articles have been published by Italian historians regarding the "generation" as an interpretative category. This shows the rise of a new interest for this issue. This article aims to verify the fortune of the "generation" as a tool of historical analysis and to make a reflection on the phases in which this notion gained special relevance, from the end of the Ancient Regime to the Modernity Crisis. The essay is an overview of the voices that insist on the relevance of the "generation" in different historical periods and national contexts, and within different disciplinary traditions. The broader aim of this overview is to assess both the limits of this concept and the opportunities it offers in the theoretical and methodological field.

Keywords: Generation, history of historiography, generational paradigm, historiographical categories, generational conflicts, history of youth
