In the opinion of Elena Fasano Guarini, it is possibile to point out in Machiavelli’s Discorsi some specific points in which the Segretario explains the inability of Republics to achieve the security and the equality in front of the law of all citizens, including those who live in the other towns of the dominio and in the rural areas of the contado. This consideration leads Machiavelli to evaluate positively the monarchical experience, particulary the French model of a king who rules under a strict control of the law. Fasano speaks explicitly of "breaches" that are opened by Machiavelli in the compact texture of the Discorsi, devoted in general to exalt the classical idea of republican freedom. The essay examines Fasano’s hypothesis and makes some criticisms.
