This article highlights the extraordinary variety of the narrative and linguistic communication circuits and of the iconographic repertory of the long Nineteenth Century. It is by no chance that it has served as the matrix for the visual imagination throughout the Twentieth century and at the beginning of the XXI century. At the same time, the reception of this nineteenth-century repertory has only been very selective, as it resulted in the progressive standardization of its palimpsests and in the elimination of the variety of the political and visual possibilities offered by its iconographic material.
