This paper investigates the new form of pluringualism due to immigration in a peripheric habitat of Southern Italy, the small town of Altamura (BA). With a macro-sociolinguistic perspective, it is intended: (-) to describe the new plurilinguistic repertoires with migrants brought in a context, such as the one of Puglia, characterized by an ancient endogenous plurilingualism, the one between Italian and dialect; (-) to verify which the perceived linguistic competencies of migrants living in Altamura are, paying particular attention to those of Italian and dialect; (-)to describe the linguistic behaviour in a large number of domains (Fishman 1972).
Keywords: Immigration, language, dialect, sociolinguistics, variation, Puglia.
