This essay analyzes trade relations in the nineteenth century Sicily by reconstructing the main trade routes and the profile of an emerging indigenous entrepreneurial class, able to act as a force for modernization. The statistical data analysis helps to disprove the historiographical cliché of an island "seized", rather confirming how Sicily inserted itself in the big business of the early nineteenth century, by entering its most representative products into the international economic circuit.
Keywords: Trade, economy, Napoleonic era, Mediterranean Sea, entrepreneurs.
