Minimum wage is a cornerstone of the European social model. Three fields of analysis are developed in the article: a coordination at European level, as proposed in the European Pillar of Social Rights; the interference of the new EU Economic governance on the minimum wage of some Member States, and the different legal frameworks at national level. After the approval of the so-called Italian Jobs Act, the hypothesis of a statutory minimum wage has been discussed in Italy too. Probably also due to the interference of EU Economic governance, the debate about this experimentation has been ideological and the Italian Government has given up. The European perspective and some endogenous features of Italian regime justify the doubt that this is a missed opportunity to face some issues of the Italian labour market.
Keywords: Minimum wage; Europe; Social pillar; EU macroeconomic governance; Jobs Act.
