The essay intends to reconstruct the history of the relationship between Naples and industry during the second half of the Twentieth Century. The author analyses the question from a broader view of national policies for industrial development in Southern Italy and addresses the case-study from the point of view of urban history, identifying the main elements of conflict that the perspective of the so-called "extraordinary intervention" created in the planning and economic program, characterized by difficulty of freeing the city from the steel and petrochemical industries in order to promote, alternatively, urban development of small and medium-sized manufacturing, trade and tourism. Considering "architecture" as a ‘term’ no longer of secondary importance in the budget of a business, the author outlines the main stages of the process of the transformation of urban-industrial space in Naples from the post-conflict reconstruction to the emergence of the first forms of de-industrialization.
