With these ‘clarifications’ the author, responding to the observations and criticisms expressed in the preceeding contributions, addresses the question of the "special" role (with respect to the other countries of western Europe) of the Italian Communist Party as the principal left-wing opposition organization in the Italy of the First Republic, of the supposed cultural hegemony of communist culture among Italian intellectuals, and of anti-fascism as a founding value of republican Italy. He then examines the other important question of the varied extension of the Resistance, of the political re-orientation of broad strata of the Italian people between 1943 and 1945, and of the ways and contents with which the PCI succeeded in becoming the main party of reference for such a large number of protagonists of the Resistance and of the construction of democratic Italy.
Keywords: Italian Communist Party, cultural hegemony, intellectuals, anti-fascism, Resistence.
