The strategic planning of the "entrepreneurial" cities in the post-Fordist era often tends to develop services and economic sectors that depend strongly upon the relational qualities and urbanity of contexts. Therefore, referring to international ex-amples, the author argues that urban design, scarcely considered in Italy, provides a strategic instrument that is central to urban regeneration policies, helping to reconcile competitiveness goals, market forces and social sustainability instances.
