The term ‘regeneration’ is ambiguous, often used as a synonym for urban transformation and physical upgrading of urban landscape. Less attention is given to the processes, the governance architecture, the skills of those who conduct the operations within a complex framework of interests, political visions, roles. The issues of territorial cohesion and urban regeneration need an integrated and holistic approach, that means to incorporate the intangible and immaterial factors as essential parts of a complex strategy. If the issue of competences for this job is not addressed - e.g., introducing cross-disciplinary paths beyond specialist skills - urban regeneration will be always ‘compressed’ between design, procedures, accompaniment processes and social animation.
