The paper retraces some of the most relevant research on modern cadastres, through the study of the historiographical debate in Italy from the 1960s to present day. The first part of the overview concerns works which, between the 1970s and 1980s, represented a significant turning point for traditional historiographical research. In this phase, along with traditional investigations on real estate, connected especially to historic- economic studies, research that increases the documental values of sources and proposes new interpretative approaches dealing with political, social, scientific and cultural issues and to the general urban reality, starts to emerge. The second part of the paper reviews works which, since the 1990s, have enriched previous tradition thanks to new survey perspectives (especially social, fiscal, geo-historical and cartographic) and to new technologies (from the first database, up to Geographical Information Systems - GIS).
Keywords: Cadastres, historiography, bibliographic overview, historical cartography, digital cartography.
