This essay reconstructs the history of mutual aid societies in the Syracuse area between 1861 and the beginning of the 20th century. The analysis of structures, functions and links with political and administrative struggles shows that, especially since the 80s of the 19th century, an intense mutual aid movement developed among workers, artisans and peasants in this area. This movement provided the basis for the Fasci siciliani and made an important contribution to the progress of trade unionism, political engagement and democracy.

Keywords: Trade union, solidarity, mutual aid, workers, politics.
