The article presents Zhaoqing New Area (115 km2 for 600.000 new inhabitants before 2030), located in the North- Western corner of the Pearl River Delta Region, in a rural context that is still marginal to the urbanization process that has invested the region. Zhaoqing was recently included in the Development Plan of the Pearl River Delta Region (2008-2020). Being part of this plan marks a difference. It allows the city to become a key actor in the development process of the Pearl River Delta Global City Region. The main role of Zhaoqing New Area, currently ensured by the increasingly spread of regional infrastructure, seems to be that of an ecological and healthy liveable city, providing a good quality of life.
