This article analyzes the special legislation that established compulsory shares of jobs for war veterans. These measures, which were part of a wider and more laborious effort to put millions of men back into civil life, were developed in the aftermath of the First World War in all the countries of the Western world, and were then renewed and reformed during and after the Second World War. The article focuses in particular on the Italian case, which presents both differences and similarities with other national cases, and examines the outcome of the war and the postwar Italian political context. The legislation for exservicemen, in particular their return to work, was seen as a way to avoid subversive drives by ex-fighters, and was therefore considered politically very important.
