Civita in the touristic imaginary represents the dying town that makes a show out of its own death. In Civita abandonment and tourism struggle for primacy, they both accelerate destructive processes of a hamlet that lives on its slow death. This death is now a show, attracting tourists from all over the world. That’s how Civita’s story turned into a new narration, erasing every trace of its past and removing its future. And that’s exactly what everyone wants: make a show out of its agony without undertaking any action to breathe new life into it, because, in the era of mass tourism, even death is profitable. It is the paradox of tourism, that prefers a semblance of life instead of real life, faking life instead of living.
