The paper examines how Italian revolutions of 1848-49 changed spaces of belonging, collective identity and participation, transforming - among many contradictions - relations between social groups, genders, religious communities, national groups and between town and country. Strong mobility of men between different poles of the revolutionary experience (Rome and Venice above all) took part in the process, though any place lived peculiar events, mixing local long-time dynamics and current solicitations, municipal pride and national aspirations. These specificities were then reflected for decades in public memory of events and protagonists.
Keywords: Borders, revolution, siege.
