The essay proposes an analysis of the scientific contribution of Lella Mazzoli to the study of social and welfare implications deriving from the introduction and diffusion of different Information and Communication Technologies and of con-sequent transformation of communication in contemporary society. Through a review of her main publications on expert system in health services, consequences of hypercomplex communication; and technologies’ role in human promotion, the article aims to highlight the innovative nature of the reflections developed by Lella Mazzoli from her research activity within the Centre for Research and Documen-tation Center on Sociology and Computer Science of the Department of Sociology at University of Bologna to her more recent work at the University of Urbino. In so doing, the article intends to contribute to a more general reflection on the potential role of sociological thought in the interpretation and management of transfor-mations fostered by technological innovation.
Keywords: Expert system; hypercomplex society; e-health; artificial intelligence; human promotion.
