‘Ersilia casainterfaccia’ is a project for housing self-production, that Architetti Senza Frontiere Italia onlus, in collaboration with arci Milano and dar=casa cooperative, has proposed to the City of Milan to answer the needs of a Rom community in conditions of fragility and illegal occupation. Its development has led to the feasibility study of a self-recovery intervention of some public buildings. Nevertheless, difficulties related to financial constraints and to the criteria for entering public housing waiting lists have sanctioned the abandonment of the project. This contribution tells its story. The intent is to highlight some critical issues that have led to such a result, as well as to emphasize how strategic the ability of public administrations can be to open up to the proposals and resources from future tenants and the third sector.
Keywords: Housing self-production; abandoned public estate; financial sustainability
