The paper focuses on the role played by cities and rural and alpine villages in the north-eastern Italian regions within the «war zone» during the First World War. The municipal administrations supported the logistical mobilization of the army, defended towns from air attacks, supplied populations and offered assistance to refugees. Cities and villages behind the frontline assumed new war-related functions: fortress, hospital, logistical center; the urban spaces were modified by the war and took on a new function.
Keywords: First World War, venetian cities, administration.
