The authors present three clinical case studies that put forward several ethical questions in patient management. An epistemological and sociohistorical approach is then applied to highlight the progressive decline of clinical skills in contemporary medicine and psychiatry. The main topic of this article is the moral underpinnings of responsibility, which in psychiatry and related disciplines are connected to the aptitude of listening, ability that generates specific and complex meanings.
