The topic of the shops, and in particular those of basic necessities, has affected the debate on the city since the interwar period. The views on the road fronts, as well as the role of attractors of pedestrian and vehicular flows, related with the quality and variety of the goods and the customers, have invested the categories of décor and urban shape. The essay aims to highlight how, thanks to the changes in social habits, of the trade system and of the visual languages that took place until the 1960s, the role of designers architects, industrial and graphic designers, but also critics and urban planners - grew with the development of professions and categories that have contributed to substantial changes in the urban pattern.
