The essay analyses the settlement mode of the Society of Jesus in Cagliari, on their first landing in Sardinia and the return in the region after the suppression of the Order, in 1773. The architectural forms and insertion in the urban context, according to standards adopted by the Society around the world, find strong obstacles in the antagonism of the aristocracy and clergy, whose real estate interests sometimes prevail on settlement plans of Jesuits. It moves very interest the attempted transfer of the College from the Castello district to the Marina, in the early seventeenth century, because of the contemporary and close birth of the first University of Cagliari, and the nineteenth-century restoration of the Jesuits fathers in Cagliari, whose architectural events are, to a large extent, still unexplored by critics.
Keywords: Jesuit architecture in Cagliari, Early Modern Age architecture, Jesuit settlement strategies in Cagliari, Architecture and clients.
