The article analyses Italian military culture, the common places and the rhetoric which forged the identity of the army during the Fascist regime, with particular attention devoted to the legitimisation of military hierarchy and the pedagogic function attributed to the of-ficers. The main sources used are the military journals, in which the role of the officers and the soldiers was defined, and where the terms of the relationship between the different members of the ‘military family’ were discussed. The relationship was characterised by tentative attempts to distinguish the nuances which separated ‘military’ from ‘Fascist’ mentality, and to reinterpret the latter in the light of the former.
