The essay aims to retrace the long story of the garden cities, starting from a synthesis of the main theoretical and design characteristics that constitute the genesis of this urban phenomenon: the essays by Ebenezer Howard and the realizations of Letchworth, Welwyn, but also Hampstead and Brentham. The sudden spread of this idea of urbanization has its impact also in other countries where, some of the most important architects of the period realize some project of garden cities: Le Corbusier, Berlage, Taut, Tessenow, even if afterwards they will follow different ideas and methods. The third part traces the impact in Italy of these proposals, with a first association with social housing until very different outcomes in the second half of the 1900s.
Keywords: Garden city; urban utopias; garden suburb
