Due to the increasing importance attributed to patients’ perspective within healthcare policies decisions, the present study provides for the first time a fresh picture about patient advocacy associations characteristics. Patient advocacy associations can be defined as a group of citizens and patients interested on a specific pathological area. By the time patient advocacy associations have acquired a fundamental role as citizens’ and patients’ representatives and defendants in terms of need, values and expec tations. Our data have been collected through a national survey. Moreover we have collected secondary data about patient advocacy associations performance. Our aim is to demonstrate how and to what extent the competencies and the skills possessed by patient advocacy associations leaders, such as the organizational features of the associations can affect the level of performance reached.
Keywords: Advocacy, patient advocacy associations, competencies, performance, skills, leader.
