Starting from the Costa Ripagnola case study, the contribution reflects on the capacity of the protection instruments to attribute new meanings to the protected area, facing the growing anthropic pressures. The protection strategy, the context from which this reflection moves, should consider the landscape both according to the traditional notion of "identity heritage" to be preserved, and as a strategic resource to experiment with new ways of integrating with governance policies.

Keywords: protection; valorization; illegal settlement; landscape; multifunctional park.
