In the Middle Ages, notary documents were often divided with the letters of the alphabet. This costume was frequent also in Sicily and, especially, in Eastern Sicily. This paper will show some examples from Catania, with reference to the local notary practice. It will also deal with the function of the letters of the alphabet according to symbology, linguistics and graphic representation.
