The article analyzes the events that took place in Cartagena de Indias on February 4, 1641, when it was learned that on December 1, 1640, the Portuguese rebelled against Philip IV. The new Portuguese monarch, João IV, hastened to send to Cartagena a ship with apocryphal letters attributed to Philip IV. In them he demanded to return to the Azores islands the Portuguese fleet that was anchored in that port. However, the fraud of the apocryphal letters was uncovered due to the loyalty of the Portuguese general Rodrigo Lobo da Silva to Philip IV. Reactions to the news are studied, as it would affect the supply of African slaves, essential for the production of gold. It is also argued that the loss of Portugal gave rise to requests for new conquest campaigns in provinces that were known for their gold wealth, but had not been subdued by the Spaniards.
