In this article, the author studies the role of the local authorities of Ciudad Real in the establishment of the diocese of Chiapa, who sought that the tithes of the parishioners did not decant in other episcopal cities. She suggests that advanced the sixteenth century, tithes served to support the bishops, the benefits of the cathedral and its councils, which began to incorporate those children of vecinos who were born in the province. She argues that the consolidation of the diocese was the result of negotiations between the councils and the bishops. She explains the interest of these authorities to expand ecclesiastical charges in the cathedral council and in the parishes, for which the mediating role of the prelates between the religious orders, the clergy and the secular council was fundamental. She concludes that during the episcopate of Andrés de Ubilla, the diocese of Chiapa was able to incorporate Soconusco into its district, a territory that disputed with the diocese of Guatemala.
