Based on unpublished documentation relating to the collection of thousands of signa-tures and addresses in the former Austro-Este duchies in Summer 1859, the essay focuses the issue of the legitimacy of power in 19th century, reconstructing Farini’s self-appointment as dictator of the Modena provinces and following the spread of participa-tory practices and popular mobilization in which subjects hitherto totally or partially ex-cluded from the public scene, such as women and Jews, found ways for maneuver and vis-ibility.
